The Final Blogmas: FanMail box- December 2015 "Toon Time"

Hey there geekonistas!

So 2015 and Blogmas have finally come to an end, and even though both were quite challenging at times, for the most part I really enjoyed them, and I hope you did too! I'll be taking a short break to celebrate the New Year and get some things done that I've been putting off, but I will be back on my regularly scheduled posting day, Monday January 4th.

Today I have for you my hot-out-of-the-mailbox-just-this-minute-arrived Fanmail Box! FanMail is a monthly subscription box "by lady geeks, for lady geeks". It contains geeky/nerdy items and accessories and is usually mailed out at the end of each month. Subscriptions can be purchased either month to month ($21.99 per box) as a 3 month prepay ($63.00 up front, which works out to $21.00 per box), 6 month prepay ($120.00 up front, $20.00 per box) or a 12 month prepay ($228.00 up front, $19.00 per box). A larger tshirt size (2xl-4xl) costs an additional $2.00 per month. These are "true" plus sizes though, not the juniors plus sizes a lot of boxes will try to pass off as plus size.

Blogmas Day Thirty: Makeup Room Tour and Storage

Hey there geekonistas!

Wow, I can't believe it's almost the end of December, and almost the end of Blogmas! Today I thought I might show you all around my makeup room and share some of my storage methods with you, both current and future plans for better storage.

This isn't a comprehensive list of all my makeup by any means- that would take more time than I'm sure anyone would want to spend here! This is just kind of a quick overview in case you were curious about how I store a collection of makeup that is far more vast than any one person needs. Also, some pictures of my cats, because as much as I would like to think this is my room, it's actually theirs. It's all theirs. All of the rooms. Theirs.

Blogmas Day Twenty-Nine: December Favorites!

Hey there geekonistas!

Still trying to get my new light box set up (it's way bigger than I thought it would be!), so while I'm struggling with that and dumping things all over the floor, let's talk about some of my favorite items from this month! I was thinking about doing a "best of the year" but since I've only been blogging for the last half I thought I would save it for next year.

So let's get to it!

Blogmas Day Twenty-Eight

Hey there geekonistas!

So, sorry to say, but I don't have a real review for you today. *Shameface* I've been traveling to visit family since the 24th and I had to go straight back to work after, so I'm exhausted and I've run out of my backlog of posts. However,  I do want to share with you some exciting news!

My lovely husband got me this photography set for Christmas! Now I will be able to take pictures even when the sun isn't out! Yay professionial-ish!

I'm pretty excited for this and I can't wait to start playing with it! Keep an eye out for more reviews coming up very soon.

Thanks for hanging out!

Blogmas Day Thirteen: Hello Waffle Cosmetics Visage: December 2015

Hey there geekonistas!

And happy last night of Hanukkah! Wow, I almost didn't get this blog out at all today. Blogmas Day Eleven: Comics Binge!

Hey there geekonistas!

So, there is still no sun today, making trying to take pictures of anything colorful a tricky proposition. Instead, I thought maybe I could share some of the comics I just can't get enough of right now with you! Maybe you will find them cool too? (I think you will.) These are currently running series only, because honestly if I were to list every old and new comic I love this post would turn into a 300 page dissertation.

Blogmas Day Ten: Baroness X Whovian Box

Hey there geekonistas!

Welcome to day ten of my Blogmas challenge, or as I like to call it, "trying to capture photos of gorgeous colors without having any actual light"! See, when I started this challenge, I failed to take into account that weather is notoriously fickle, and would likely not cooperate with me on all of the days. And of course, I'm way too disorganized to do any of this in advance! Ahahahahahsob.

In any case, I am going to try my best to do this box justice. This was the super limited edition Whovian box put out by Baroness X, who makes indie, cruelty free, awesome nail polishes and demiflux, who makes some incredible hand made jewelry. There were only thirty of these Doctor Who dedicated boxes made, but you can still get three of the four nail polish colors on the Baroness X website! The only one you can no longer buy is Trenzalore, which was exclusive to the box. The box also included "mani bombs", two kinds of shaped soap, a sample of cuticle balm, earrings, and came with a choice of necklace, ring, or bracelet. There was also a card with information about each product, plus an exclusive one of a kind discount code.

Blogmas Day Nine: Darling Girl Cosmetics' Operation Sparkle

Hey there geekonistas!

I've got something cool today! I just got my Pink Friday/Black Friday hauls in from Darling Girl Cosmetics and, aside from some shadows from the "Snow in Love" Collection (based on Edward Scissorhands) that I will be reviewing later, I got my limited edition "Operation Sparkle" tin set! I still haven't recovered from that mid-season finale, but I'll do my best to pull myself together to show you this set.

Blogmas Day Eight: An Advent Calendar and the Best Cheap Palette Ever

Hey there geekonistas!

I got a very special package in the mail yesterday! It's my Fortune Cookie Soap "Nightmare Before Christmas" Advent Calendar! Woohoo! This is my first year getting one, but from what I gather, Fortune Cookie Soap does one of these every year. It's a box that contains a mix of full and sample size mystery products, all in their super popular "Nightmare Before Christmas" inspired scents. Each item is individually wrapped with a tag on it showing the date you are supposed to open it. Unfortunately, this box is sold out, but I thought it would be cool if we could open mine together! So, starting on December 14th I'll put aside my impatience to tear off all the wrapping paper at once and open one product per day and post it here. Sound like a plan? Yes! I thought so.

Blogmas Day Seven: Oops, and the November J-list Snack Box

Hey there geekonistas!

Happy Hanukkah to all my Jewish friends and family! So, I have a bit of a confession. I totally failed at my blogmas challenge! *sob* I forgot to put a post up yesterday. But, I'm not giving up, and I will try to finish out the rest of the challenge!

So today, mostly since I'm hungry, I wanted to review for you November's J-list Snack Subscription Box. In case you aren't familiar, J-List is a website that sells items directly from Japan. They have a wide range of anime items, along with kitchen and household things, snacks, and more. The "more" includes a lot of "ecchi" or adult items, so if that kind of thing offends you you can always check out the J-Box site, which is a G rated version of J-List. This subscription is actually not currently available from the website. J-List recently changed over to a completely new site and they are still working to transfer things like subscriptions over.  Unfortunately, this means I don't have any information about pricing for you at this time. (I prepaid a year in advance, so it doesn't get charged every month.) I will update this post as soon as the subscriptions go live again!

There are a ton of tasty treats included in this months box, so let's eat!

Omakase by Viewster : December 2016

Hey there geekonistas!

Day five of my Blogmas challenge has arrived, and today I wanted to share with something that is brand new and really cool! This is Omakase, an anime themed subscription box produced by the streaming service Viewster. Viewster produced two beta-test boxes, but this one is their first official release!

AFK Cosmetics : Round Table Collection - Part Two

Hey there geekonistas!

Welcome to day four of Blogmas and part two of my review of AFK Cosmetics' Round Table collection! You can find part one - blush, highlighter, and lip glosses here. Today we're checking out the six loose shadows that come with the collection. So let's make like an unladen swallow and dive on in!

An African or European swallow?

AFK Cosmetics : Round Table Collection - Part One

Hey there geekonistas!

On the third day of Blogmas, my true love gave to me.... some Knights that Say Ni! Ah, I'm so sorry. Not really though. Today I wanted to share with you the Round Table collection that I recent got from a new-to-me indie makeup company, AFK Cosmetics! AFK Cosmetics is a cruelty free (Leaping Bunny Certified!) makeup company that produces 100% vegan loose pigments, lip products, and primers based on various fandoms such as gaming, tv, movies, and more.

The Round Table collection is, of course, based on the famous Monty Python movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".  It features six loose eye shadow pigments, a loose blush, a loose highlighter, and two lip products. I bought the full size of everything because the cover art was just too cute to pass up! Unfortunately, it seems that this collection was limited edition, because I can't find it on the website anymore. Anyway, enough with the preamble, let's go to Camelot!

On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. 'Tis a silly place.

Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet November 2015

Hey there geekonistas!

Welcome to day two of Blogmas! Today I am playing catch-up a little bit and bringing you last month's Vanishing Cabinet from Notoriously Morbid.

The Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet is a monthly subscription service that includes a number of mini sized loose eye shadow pigments (anywhere from 4-6)  and/or lip and other bonus products, sometimes including a guest product from another indie company. It costs $12.90 per month including shipping. There is currently a wait list to get the subscription which you can join by emailing Notoriously Morbid.

It's beginning to look a lot like Blogmas!

Hey there geekonistas!

So this month, I have decided to set myself a Blogmas challenge! My challenge is to write one blog entry per day every day until the end of the month. There's going to be a wide range of topics, per my usual style, everything from established favorites to new discoveries, makeup to music to books, movies and more. There might even be.... a giveaway? If there is anything you are interested in and would like me to write about, now is the time to let me know!

Today I would like to kick things off by talking a little bit about one of my favorite geek themed bands: Kirby Krackle. Kirby Krackle (powered by Singer/Songwriter Kyle Stevens) was founded in 2009 and they have been revolutionizing the geek music scene ever since with their fantastic music and pop culture inspired lyrics.

Their latest album, Mutate, Baby! contains one of my favorite songs of theirs - "The Day My Powers Arrived." On the surface it's a song about joining the X-men, but underneath it's a song for anyone that's ever felt like they aren't ready for the big changes that sweep through life now and then. There is an official music video that you can watch here.

There's also a lighter side to Kirby Krackle, with a wicked sense of humor running through some of the songs, such as the song that first got me addicted to KK, and then got me through a semester of calculus - "Booty Do Math". I dare you to listen to that song and not at least smile.

It's not just the lyrics that makes Kirby Krackle awesome, though. Kyle Stevens is a seriously talented musician who uses a wide range of styles and makes them all sound awesome. It's not just geek music, it's really good music that is also geeky. If that makes sense? Anyway, I highly recommend checking them out! You can find a great selection of their songs on their YouTube channel if you just want to have a listen, or you can find them on iTunes or Bandcamp.

So what are some of your favorite geeky musicians? Let me know in the comments!

FanMail Box : November 2015 - Wars Among the Stars!

Hey there geekonistas!

Has everyone gotten their Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping done yet? I scored a lot of really awesome deals on indie makeup and some Christmas gifts, so I'm really excited! Plus I managed to snag one of the sooooper limited edition Baroness X Whovian boxes, so keep an eye out for that in the future!

But today we're here to talk about the FanMail box for November.

They've gone to all purple stickers now, so this doesn't denote an extra special box. Just regular special.

Fandom of the Month Club : November 2015

If you celebrate Thanksgiving, or even if you don't, I hope you are spending today surrounded by loved ones, eating lots of delicious food and taking a moment to be grateful for the good things in your life. I'm grateful for you being here!

Today, I'd like to share with you a new-to-me subscription service, the Fandom of the Month Club! Fandom of the Month club is a monthly subscription box that delivers geeky themed jewelry and other accessories. The cost is $13.00 a month for a month-to-month subscription, $36.00 ($12.00 per box) if you pay for three months up front, and $66.00 ($11.00 per box) if you pay for six months up front. Shipping is extra and costs $3.50 per month within the U.S. and $9.80 per month internationally.

Kiss My Sass: Lip Addicts Anonymous November 2015

Hey there geekonistas!

So, Disneyland was actually kind of a bust, beauty wise. It seems that Disney has discontinued the "Beautifully Disney" line of makeup, so there wasn't much there for me to review. Fortunately, I still had an awesome time, especially checking out the "Season of the Force" Star Wars event that's currently going on in Tomorrowland! I did discover that Disney is now selling Her Universe (geeky clothing made for girls) in the parks, so that was a cool find.

But anyway, since I don't really have any Disney stuff to review, let's go ahead and check out this months Lip Addicts Anonymous from Kiss My Sass Cosmetics, centered around the theme of my favorite hot beverage, coffee!

Hello Waffle Cosmetics Visage: November 2015

Hey there geekonistas!

So if all goes well, when this post goes up I will be taking my long delayed 5-year anniversary trip to Disneyland!  I'm so excited! And of course I'll be checking out any and all makeup and beauty items while I'm there, maybe for a haul and special report? Fun! But that's for another time. Today my topic is this month's Visage subscription from Hello Waffle!

J-List Snack Subscription : October 2015

Hey there geekonistas!

So I realize that October was a pretty makeup heavy month, and while that is not a bad thing by any means, I thought I would take a break and try to branch out more this month. So, I thought now would be a good time to start reviewing something I've actually been receiving for a year or more now - the J-List Japanese Snack Subscription box!

Notoriously Morbid Tribute Trio No. 4: Down the Spiral

Hey there geekonistas!

So, when I was young and wild.... er... well, young anyway, the soundtrack to my misadventures was a strange and varied thing, but it always, ALWAYS included some kick-ass industrial, usually in the form of my introduction to the genre: Nine Inch Nails. Now that I have grown and changed and am no longer quite so angry at the world, NIN has slipped down my playlists somewhat, but I will always keep a special place on the record shelf of my heart for the music of Trent Reznor. And that brings me to the Limited Edition Tribute Trio recently released by Notoriously Morbid in collaboration with Tori, better known as Biohazardous Beauty on You Tube.

Fortune Cookie Soap 2015 Winter Soap Box : Welcome Santa!

Hey there geekonistas!

Everybody has a favorite Christmas movie. That one movie they have to watch over and over again every year in order to really feel like it's the Holiday season. For some people it's "It's a Wonderful Life", for some it's "Miracle on 34th Street", for some it's the Peanuts or Rankin/Bass specials. For me, it's "Elf". Yup, that movie about a 30-year old "elf" played by Will Ferrell, who travels to New York City in order to meet his real father. For some reason, it just speaks to that part of me that still gets unreasonably excited about the holiday season. "Santa!! Oh my god, Santa's coming!! I know him!! I know him!!!"

Fanmail Box : October 2015 - Yay for YA!

Hey there geekonistas!

Apologies for the late post this week, I picked up some extra hours and a nasty virus at work. Fun! Anyway, today I wanted to share with you the Fanmail box for October! The theme is "Yay for YA!" and it celebrates all the awesome YA literature that is out there. (As someone who works in the young people's portion of the library, I approve heartily!)

I got a purple sticker!!! Something extra special is inside! Read 'til the end to find out what it is!

Notoriously Morbid: Halloween 2015

Hey there geekonistas!

Today I have the final installment of Halloween goodies - Notoriously Morbid's Halloween collection, "An Evening with Mr. Price", based, of course, on the works of Vincent Price. Unfortunately, this collection is currently sold out, but the wonderful gals at Notoriously Morbid have been known to bring back popular colors! As a bonus, I also have this month's Color of the Month, a Notoriously Morbid Fan Fav - "Creepy Green Light", which is still available and will be until the end of the month. Let's get started!

Notoriously Morbid: October 2015 Vanishing Cabinet

Hey there geekonistas!

One thing I love about Halloween collections is watching all the various directions that different companies go in for the themes. We have horror in books, horror in movies, fun, silly movies, traditional themes, fairy tales, and, in the case of this month's Vanishing Cabinet from Notoriously Morbid, even some famous ghosts!

Hello Waffle Cosmetics: Waffleween Collection

Hey there geekonistas!

I've... I've made a terrible mistake. There, I admitted it. My terrible, horrible, heartbreaking mistake? That I didn't order the full "Waffleween" collection while it was available. I foolishly only ordered the loose pigment set and skipped out on the lip colors entirely. I'll make it through but next year... next year I must be wiser.

The "Waffleween" collection is Hello Waffle Cosmetics Halloween collection. This collection IS limited edition and some of it is sold out already, but there are still a few colors you might be able to get your hands on!  This set is based on the owner's favorite "creepy stories". I don't recognize any of them (I'm so out of the loop on this sort of thing) so if some kind soul would like to educate me in the comments it would be most appreciated.

The set arrived in a a cute paper bag sealed with a grinning jack-o-lantern sticker that echoes the lid art on the jars.

FanMail Box: September 2015: Legends of the CW

Hey there geekonistas!

I finally got my Fanmail box from September (they were delayed in shipping due to a lost delivery) so I thought I would take a short break (just a short one!) from Halloween madness and share with you my box.

These are "true" plus sizes though, not the juniors plus sizes a lot of boxes will try to pass of as plus size.

This month's theme is "Legends of the CW" and it contains items from not only the current CW shows, but also some past iterations of the CW like the WB and UPN. (If you are old enough to remember those. I know I'm not. Ahahahahahahahahahahahayesiam.)

Espionage Cosmetics: The Cenobite Collection

Hey there geekonistas!

I can't recall any horror movie monster that has held me as grotesquely fascinated as the Cenobites. Creepy, gory, and more than a little sexy, these creatures, lead by the iconic Pinhead, are released from Hell by a gateway in a puzzle box in order to drag innocent souls back down with them. Although I would warn against watching any "Hellraiser" movies that Clive Barker was not directly involved in (some of them get pretty silly) most of the series is perfect viewing for macabre thrills.

Hello Waffle : Visage October 2015

Hey there geekonistas!

It's been a gray, rainy couple days here in the desert. Although I am VERY happy that the temperatures are finally beginning to cool off  (75 degrees out today, where's my jacket?!) I was just thinking I needed a little pick me up to get me out of the rainy doldrums when what appeared on my doorstep? My Hello Waffle Visage subscription!

Kiss My Sass Cosmetics: Lip Addicts Anonymous October 2015

Hey there geekonistas!

I've got a bonus post for you today! I wanted to take a little break while I was swatching the rest of the Darling Girl Halloween collection, so when my Lip Addicts Anonymous subscription arrived, I just couldn't help myself! I will actually probably have quite a few bonus posts leading up to Halloween, since I have SO much stuff to share with you and I want to make sure I get it all out in time.

Lip Addicts Anonymous is a monthly subscription service from Kiss My Sass Cosmetics, an indie, cruelty-free makeup company. The subscription is $8.00 per month plus shipping (my shipping to Las Vegas, NV is $2.25) and it includes a full size exclusive lip product, two cosmetic samples, one bath and body sample and a coupon code.

This month's package is Halloween themed, of course! It's based on the "Sleepy Hollow" movie. Look at that adorable treat bag! And the bonus item is a cute Halloween pencil. I really feel like I was just out trick-or-treating and came home with a great goodie bag!

Darling Girl Cosmetics: Queens of Horror Collection, Part One

Hey there geekonistas!

Halloween is creeping ever closer... are you ready for it? I know I am! Or at least, I will be once I head down to the Halloween store this weekend to pick up some spooooooky yard decor! I finally have a chance to do my yard up right this year and I am gonna go wild. Let me tell you, I do not do the "cartoony" sort of Halloween decorations. There will be corpses. There will be blood. There will be bugs. It will be horrifying. Children will run screaming. It will be glorious.

Speaking of horrifying, my review today is on Darling Girl Cosmetics "Queens of Horror" collection! Although perfectly Halloween themed, it is not limited edition, so you can grab these colors whenever. There are SO many items in this collection that I had to break my review up into two parts. Look for the second part coming early next week. This collection is based on the bad-assest ladies in the horror world (Is assest a word? It is now.) and it contains 12 loose pigments and two lip products in a variety of colors and finishes. You can purchase this collection in sample, mini, or full sizes, and the best part is that even the mini sizes come with the label art! There's even an option to buy just the lid art. This is a company that gets me. By the way, this fabulous art was created by Angeline Roussel, and if you want to see more of her work, you can check out her website here!

Gaze upon the art. GAZE UPON IT!

Sugarpill : Edward Scissorhands 25th Anniversary Collection

Hey there geekonistas!

*Flails arms wildly around* You guys, you guys!! I got my hands on the new Sugarpill collection and guess what? It's themed around Edward Scissorhands! I remember loving that movie so much when it came out.. 25 years ago, apparently. (Whaaaaaaaaaat? I'm so old T_T)

Anyway, the collection is currently sold out on the Sugarpill website, but they are getting a second shipment in soon, so if it interests you, you can grab it then. The full collection (palette and 2 nail polishes) is $52.00, while the palette alone is $36.00 and the nail polishes are $10.00 each. Sugarpill offers $6.00 flat shipping inside the U.S., with free shipping if you order over $100.

I swatched all of the eyeshadows on bare skin with no primer. I didn't swatch the nail polishes because frankly my nails are ratchet as hell right now and I'm trying desperately to fix them. I will talk a little bit about the color and texture of the polishes though. Let's get to it!

The palette comes in a protective sleeve that looks just like the outside of the regular palette. I thought this was a nice touch to keep it from getting damaged during shipment or when travelling - I feel like it underscores the fact that this is a collector's piece. It is a little bit smaller than I thought it would be from photos, but it still contains an ample amount of shadows.

September Favorites!

Hey there geekonistas!

Where did September go? Last I remember it was August and I was complaining about the heat.. now it's a whole month later and I'm still complaining about the heat. But, relief is on the horizon, so while I wait for those 80 degree days to roll around, let's talk about some of my random favorites for the month!

Hello Waffle Cosmetics: September 2015 Visage

Hey there geekonistas!

Have I got a pumpkin-spice flavored treat for you today. Well, not really pumpkin spice flavored, but it's so intensely fall that you might feel like it should be! It's this month's Visage from Hello Waffle Cosmetics!

Visage is a monthly subscription box service from Hello Waffle Cosmetics. It costs $25 a month, plus shipping, and includes a mix of full and sample size items for eyes, lips and face, including one product from a guest indie company. There is currently a wait list to subscribe, which you can join by emailing Hello Waffle.

This month's theme is Hansel and Gretel! Hansel and Gretel is one of my favorite fairy tales because Gretel is just such a bad ass. (Also, I want to live in a gingerbread house.) This month's Visage includes 3 full size loose eye shadow pigments, 1 slimline lip color, and a full size blush from the guest indie company, Baroque Cosmetics. This month's Visage came packaged in a cute white box with a brown ribbon bow, but I didn't photograph it because, well mostly because I forgot, but also because Christine, the owner of Hello Waffle, is going to be changing up the packaging very soon anyway. There is also an information sheet that lists all the products, their values (in USD and Canadian) and their ingredients on the front, with a quick version of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale on the back, which I thought was a really nice touch. It also contains instructions for a makeup look using all of the products, another well-thought out touch!

Cover Art! <3 <3 <3

The first eye shadow is called "Half Loaf of Bread" and its described as "Candied Orange with green and orange sparkle". I can't seem to pick out the green sparkle that well, but I definitely like the metallic orange look of this one. This is swatched over Geek Chic Cosmetics' Power Up Primer.

Blurred to show sparkle.

The second shadow in the set is called Red Eyes. The info sheet describes this as "Matte burnt brick". Its kind of a cool tone, almost dusty rose color. As usual with Hello Waffle's matte shades, it's exceptionally opaque and smooth. I swatched this pigment on bare skin.

The final eye shadow in the trio is a "Darkened red-brown with green to red shimmer" called "Fires. I really like this shade. Its a complex and shimmery brown without being too glittery. This is swatched over Geek Chic Cosmetics' Power Up Primer.

Blurred for sparklies.
Next up we have the lip color called "Better than Pebbles". This is a pinky-brown color in the tube that, on me at least, pulls a lot pinker when its actually applied. Its a somewhat sheer formula that requires a couple of passes to build opacity. This color is so pretty. I actually had to hunt it down for my review since I had already put it in my purse for a great "everyday" lip color.

And finally, we have this month's guest indie product from Baroque Cosmetics called "Candy Bricks." This is described as a shimmery orange. It looks a little intimidating in the pan but its actually quite a soft and pretty color once it's blended out. Below I have it swatched on primer (left) and then applied with a soft fluffy brush and blended out on the right.

You know what they say.. if it ain't Baroque, don't fix it! Ahahaahahhahah im so sorry

Final Thoughts: I waited a really, really, long time to get off the Visage wait list and I am so glad I did. I love this month's theme and the colors have me longing even harder for fall. Hello Waffle's characteristic quality, care, and stellar customer service make this box a must have for me.

What did you think of this month's box? What's your favorite fairy tale? Let me know in the comments!
