Fyrinnae Pressed Shadows

Hey there geekonistas!

A couple months ago, for my July favorites, I included the "Steampunk" pressed eye shadow from Fyrinnae. Well, since then my collection of pressed shadows has... grown a bit. I blame this wholly on the Labor Day Sale. Okay, I mean.. I bought some before the sale, but... still. I'm blaming it. In any case, I thought since I have a pretty wide range now, it would be fun to go through and swatch them for you and give you my thoughts.

Fyrinnae is a cruelty free indie company that produces some of the most gorgeous, pigmented shadows and lip colors on the market. They release new colors usually once a season, and all colors are permanent unless something untowards happens. The best place to find news on Fyrinnae is the blog on their website, or you can find them on Instagram now as well. (Yay!)

Each regular pressed shadow is $9.00, with the Arcane Magic and Exquisites shades at $9.50. They come in a 2 gram (26 mm) pan that comes either in a compact, or you can just get the magnetic pan alone and save a dollar. Buying the tin alone is Fyrinnae's recommended way of purchasing them since the shadows break more easily in the compacts than just in the tin. I, however,  am a dummy dum dum and always forget to order the tins rather than the compacts.

Unlike loose pigments, pressed eye shadows are generally meant to be worn without a sticky base, so I have swatched all of these over Urban Decay's Primer Potion using a flat brush. I photographed them both in natural (indirect sunlight) and a mix of incandescent/ LED lighting.

First up in the regular pressed shadows, we have "Unicorn". Much like the fabled beast this is named after, this beauty is difficult to capture. At first it looks like an off-white color, but applied it has an bluish iridescence similar to Sugarpill's Lumi. It's more of a sheer color rather than intense pigment, meant more for highlighting or going over other shades.

"Atomic Afterglow" Is a neutral grey taupe base with an orangey-gold sheen. This one gave me a little trouble trying to get an intense color out of it, but as you can see it eventually built up nicely.

"Rapunzel Had Extensions" is one of my new all-time favorite shades. It's a pink base with a gold sheen that you have to see to believe. Absolutely amazingly gorgeous. Fyrinnae claims this is one of their most popular shades and it's easy to see why. This was also easily the most pigmented shade out of the bunch, smooth, buttery and very easy to build up.

Aw, "Hitched". My goodness. This is a warm red with a metallic red sheen and it's amazing. Red eye shadows are notoriously difficult to get right, so having one like this is extra special. Like "Atomic Afterglow", however, this one took some patience to work with.

The first of the Arcane Magic shadows I picked up is called "Dark Bidding". The Arcane Magic eye shadows are different from the regular line in that their colors seem to shift depending on lighting and viewing angle. "Dark Bidding" shifts from a blue purple to warm pink and has chunky blue sparkles. I found this one prone to a lot of fall out due to the sparkles, so maybe it would work best over a sticky base.

Next is "The Alchemist". This shadow starts as a deep teal and shifts from there to a blue purple, purple, and pink. Truly intense! This one fell out of it's pan in transit, but I was able to simply push it back in, no harm done.

And finally, the shade I gushed over before, "Steampunk". This one is a deep bronze shade that shifts to pink and gold as the light and angle change.

Final Thoughts: Pressed shadows are kind of a double edged sword. They're less messy, easier to use and less intimidating than loose pigments, especially for beginners, but they often don't have quite the same rich color payoff. Luckily, Fyrinnae's colors are so rich to begin with that pressing them just brings them down to the level of the highest quality shadows of some other name brands.

What do you think of the Fyrinnae pressed shadows? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time, thanks for hanging out!
