So today I wanted to change gears a little bit and talk about makeup. (But Lura, don't you always talk about makeup? Yes, but this is different.) Today I wanted to start a new series of posts to answer some of the questions either I get personally or I see other people who love makeup having to answer often. This includes general makeup questions, my cruelty-free philosophy, and questions about indie makeup companies. Today's post is going to be about general makeup philosophy questions. Let's dive right in, shall we?
Question: Why do you wear makeup? You're pretty enough without it.
Answer: For me, makeup is not just about "being pretty". It's a way for me to express myself using colors and shapes, and to emphasize certain features that I really want people to notice. It's art on my face. Putting on makeup is also very therapeutic for me - its very calming and can instantly lift me out of a bad mood on a stressful day. Just the act of sitting down at my vanity, turning on the light, and looking through my collection makes me feel calm, happy, and creative.
Question: Do you wear makeup because you have low self-esteem?
Answer: Ugh. No. I mean, I do have low self esteem but trust me, putting on makeup doesn't change that. In fact, wearing the bright makeup looks I do attracts more attention, putting me further out there. For me at least, makeup isn't a mask I hide behind, its a frame that helps showcase me to the world.
Question: Isn't wearing makeup shallow and vain?
Answer: Well, yes. Of course it is. That's part of what makes it fun. But please don't mistake it for being my whole personality. Just because I choose to wear a wicked winged eyeliner doesn't mean I can't still do math in my head, or that I'm not a caring and compassionate person.
Question: Does wearing makeup make people take you less seriously?
Answer: Probably? I am fortunate enough that I haven't had to encounter anything like this - I attend school and work part time in the children's department of a library, so I don't tend to be judged on my fashion and makeup choices a lot, but I know a lot of other people do have to deal with this sort of thing. It sucks but there's always people out there ready to judge you for how look, whether its too much makeup or too little, how you cut your hair, how you dress, on and on and on.
Question: Don't you know guys like more natural makeup?
Answer: Good for them, let them wear more natural makeup. My husband loves me with and without my crazy makeup, and that's good enough for me.
Well, that was a wordy post. Here, have some pictures of my kitties to make up for all the words.

Morticia - a cat that knows how to kick ass. Mostly Rumplestilskin's. |
And that wraps it up for today! What do you think? Have you ever had to answer any of these questions? Are there any other makeup questions you get on a regular basis?
