Day five of my Blogmas challenge has arrived, and today I wanted to share with something that is brand new and really cool! This is Omakase, an anime themed subscription box produced by the streaming service Viewster. Viewster produced two beta-test boxes, but this one is their first official release!
Omakase is a bi-monthly subscription service that is based around one particular anime per box, and includes all different kinds of merchandise, plus, the subscription comes with access to ad-free HD streaming on Viewster. The cost is $29.00 per box plus shipping, which works out to a total of $35.00 every other month. It is also worth noting that you cannot get the ad-free streaming on the site without signing up for the box.
This month the anime is one of my recent favorites, Kill la Kill! I was super excited when I found out, and the items do not disappoint. Let's check it out!
First up, can we talk about this adorable packaging? I love it! One of the first things I pulled out of the box was this super cool card - it has some really neat Kill la Kill artwork on the front and information about all of this month's items on the back.
Next up we have my favorite item in the box, though that is a tough call. It's a scarf with Senketsu's eye on it, that looks just like the one Ryuko (the main character) wore in one of the episodes. This scarf is huge! This is it draped over the back of a 3-seat couch. It's very thin, light material though, so it's easy to fold up small. This is a box exclusive that won't be available anywhere else.
Next is another exclusive to this box. This is a gold foil edition of the Kill la Kill manga. I believe this manga is based on the anime, and not the other, more usual way around. This is a really nice edition with some full color pages at the front.
Next up we have a wristband, printed with the insignia of the Honouji Academy's elite 3 star uniforms. This wristband is really nice, thick and soft.
No subscription box would be complete without a button! This one features Guts, Ryuko's best friend Mako's family dog.
Speaking of Mako, (imho the real hero of the series) the final item in the box is this awesome bath towel, printed with Mako doing her Ryuko impression. This is another item that is exclusive to the box, though it will be released for sale next year. The material is okay on this - it feels kind of thin and not too absorbent, but let's be honest, this is probably intended more as a collectible than a useful item.
Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed this box and felt it was well worth the cost for me. I do think the value on this one will have a tendency to swing a bit though, based on whether you're a fan of that particular month's anime. This month I lucked out with Kill la Kill, but the next box is Naruto, and I'm not as big a fan of that. (I don't dislike it, I just feel like I came too late to it and now there's just too much of it to ever catch up with.) However, fan of the anime or not, there is still access to ad-free streaming to consider. If this is something you will use it could definitely make up a large portion of the value.
