Hey there geekonistas!
Happy Halloween to you! I hope you're having all kinds of spooky fun, or at least enjoying some lovely fall or spring weather, wherever you are! I finally got my yard decorated, got my costume together, and assembled 150 treat bags for the trick-or-treaters! When I said we do Halloween up right around here... I meant it!
Today, however, I have some news to share with you : I am going on hiatus. I love writing this blog but I feel as though I have come to a place where I am not improving and I cannot figure out how to push myself forward. I've often referred to this blog as "an excuse to buy more makeup", which was true and very helpful while I was trying to build a collection. Now that I have a (really) large collection, I'm going to have to be way more selective about the makeup I choose to add to it and that is, unfortunately, not conducive towards writing two reviews every week!
I can't say for sure what the future of GeekShines is going to be. What I do know is that I am taking the next two months off to think about the direction I want to take it and really work towards improving whatever skills I need to improve in order to do that. I really want to extend my thanks to you, my readers, for coming back here to read my ramblings and look at my potato photographs every week. You are awesome, I really appreciate you and I hope to see you back here again when I come back from hiatus!

Fyrinnae : Halloween - Liquid Eyeliners
Hey there geekonistas!
My Halloween decorating has ground to a screeching halt upon the discovery of a nest of scorpions in my front yard - officially making it 100% scarier than I could ever hope to achieve through animatronics and fog machines, and rendering it unusable until we have the pest guy come out (again) to spray everything with poison. It's disappointing but at least I have good foundation for next year, when we will be certain to spray the yard BEFORE we start decorating.
So to distract myself from the sadness and hundreds of dollars worth of decorations that are currently in a pile in my front room, I thought I would test out and share with you a brand new product from one of my favorite indie cosmetic brands, Fyrinnae - liquid gel eyeliners!

September Favs and Flops
Hey there geekonistas!
Some people love fall for the cooler weather. Some love it for the Pumpkin Spice everything. Some love it for Halloween. Me? I love it for all of those things, but mainly for all the new indie makeup collections! See, unlike mainstream companies, indies don't directly transition from summer to christmas collections - in fact, Halloween is the time of year when most indies have their biggest releases! There's absolutely no way I can review them all *sighs dramatically* but I am definitely going to spend this next month trying as many as I can! But of course, before we start off on next month, let's take a moment to look back over last month and pick out a few of the things I've been loving!

Woohoo! I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow to Disney World and I am so excited! I'm going to be on vacation mode so there will be no posts next week, but if you want to see what I'm up to you can always check out my Instagram, I'll be posting lots of pics! Innocent + Twisted Alchemy: i+t alchemist - September 2016

I hope this week is starting out well for you! I have three days of work left before my vacation starts and while I haven't quite started counting out the minutes and seconds yet, I'm getting close! Of course, according to the weather it's going to rain the entire time I'm there... literally the sun will not come out until the day after I leave, but I'm okay with that. At least I won't get sunburned, right? Anyway, in the short time before my brain goes on vacation without me, I thought I would share with you this month's i+t alchemist from Innocent + Twisted Alchemy!

Fyrinnae Pressed Shadows

A couple months ago, for my July favorites, I included the "Steampunk" pressed eye shadow from Fyrinnae. Well, since then my collection of pressed shadows has... grown a bit. I blame this wholly on the Labor Day Sale. Okay, I mean.. I bought some before the sale, but... still. I'm blaming it. In any case, I thought since I have a pretty wide range now, it would be fun to go through and swatch them for you and give you my thoughts.

Shiro Cosmetics : Elemental Glows Collection
Hey there geekonistas!
I hope you're all doing well today. I have a trip coming up in a few weeks so I'm almost at the "running around like a chicken" phase of getting ready. Almost, but not quite, so before the storm hits I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the launch of a brand new product from Shiro Cosmetics!
Shiro Cosmetics is a long running indie makeup company that produces vegan, cruelty-free loose eye shadow pigments, blushes, highlighters, bronzers, contour powders, and lip products. They also stock products from brands like Detrivore, Femme Fatale, Sayuri, Bettie Pain, Ms. Sparkle and Victorian Disco on their site.
Today I'm checking out their latest collection, the Elemental Glows! These are nine new cream highlighters based on all the different Eveelutions, and they just have the best lid art ever. Unfortunately, I just got the sample sizes, which don't come with lid art, but if there were stickers available I'd snatch them up in a second!

Yes, I know, my Hello Waffle Visage review is going up late again! I'm working hard on getting caught up and hopefully this month I'll be on time. I am super excited about the August theme too, since it's based on "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare - which is not only my favorite play of his, but also served as inspiration for my wedding!

Special Saturday Post: Labor Day Sales!

I just wanted to post a quick little entry today! I know not everyone is in the US and therefore not celebrating Labor Day.. in fact, I don't even think people inside the US really celebrate Labor Day... except as an excuse for a three day weekend! But in any case, there are a TON of sales going on this weekend as everyone clears out their summer inventories to make room for fall, so I thought I would share some of the ones I have found!

Well August seems to have wound to a close, pitching us headlong into fall, and apparently in the case of most makeup companies, straight into the holidays? Seriously though Urban Decay, you need to let me chill out with my apple cider for a bit before you make me start panicking about spending all my holiday money. For today, however I thought we could try to squeeze one last bit of summery-ness in and talk about my August Favs and Flops!

Notoriously Morbid : Vanishing Cabinet August 2016 "Perfect Day"
Hey there geekonistas!
I usually try not to be snarky, because I truly believe the world is a better place when you put out positive energy instead of negative. However, today I have had enough of something and I really need to make my displeasure known. Can we PLEASE stop saying that things make people's eyes "pop"? It just... it just sounds so dang disturbing! I just can't stop picturing beauty gurus with their eyeballs rolling around on the floor and its horrible and funny at the same time and makes me feel like a terrible human being. So please, save me from being just the worst and let's.. stop.

Innocent + Twisted : i+t alchemist - August 2016
Guys. GUYS.
I missed out on July's i+t alchemist. It was the restructuring month where only the one month trials were available and I was gonna order it and I forgot until all of the sudden it was August first and I couldn't get it anymore. Guys. I missed out on the Ranma 1/2 themed box! One of my favorite anime of all time and I missed out on the subscription dedicated to it! *sobs inconsolably* Thankfully, overstock of the individual colors should be up on the Innocent & Twisted store soon, so I can at least get a hold of those. *Sigh of relief*

Once Upon A Book Club
Hey there geekonistas!
Well, this weekend was both fun and hugely stressful! The Sabakon Fashion show was a blast, but for someone with severe social anxiety, it was also very draining. I must have done five or six test runs of my makeup for show last week, which burned me out a little bit, so let's move away from beauty today and into something at least equally as cool! (To me, anyway). I just got my first box from Once Upon a Book Club and I just HAD to share it with you!

Glamour Doll Eyes: OTM August 2016
Hey there geekonistas!
So, wow! I'm going to be in a geeky fashion show this Saturday! I'm excited but also kind of terrified, since I've never actually done anything like this before. I'm walking for Darling Army, who makes some of the best "simple" cosplay clothing around, like pinafores, printed dresses, leggings, and a whole lot more! If you live in the Las Vegas area and want to come see the show, it's going to be a part of the Sabakon convention at the Alexis Park Resort, Saturday at 11 am. Whee!
But before all that, let's jump into something else exciting: this month's OTM from Glamour Doll Eyes!

Espionage Cosmetics: BOOM! Box August 2016
Hey there geekonistas!
I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but when I have a bunch of packages and subscriptions on order, no matter when I ordered them, they all seem to arrive at once! That happened to me this week and it's super fun, but also kinda sad at the same time since I feel like there is so much to look at and unpack that I don't spend as much time enjoying each item. Still, when you have a pile of really awesome packages and you rush to open one particular one first, you have to know that one is pretty special, right? Well, for me this week, that "special" package is definitely my BOOM! Box from Espionage Cosmetics!

July Favs and Flops

I honestly have no idea where July went - it seems like just yesterday I was so excited about getting to wear tropical scents and now everybody is putting out "back to school" signs and apple-scented everything. We've still got some summer left, though, and even though the weather here is more towards the "wash you away" side than the "bask in the sun" side, I'm going to enjoy what's left!
Speaking of enjoying summer things, why don't we take a look at all the things I was enjoying during the month of July? You may want a snack and a comfy seat, 'cause there were a lot of them!

This Vanishing Cabinet come with perfect timing! I just saw the new Ghostbusters movie last week and oh, man, I loved it so much. I want to be friends with Jillian Holtzmann more than I've wanted to be friends with anyone in my entire life. Unfortunately, since I can't jump into the movie world I guess I'll have to vent my frustration by playing with this month's Vanishing Cabinet from Notoriously Morbid!

I have always been fascinated by myths and legends. When I was a kid I had a book about Greek Mythology that I would read over and over until I had each God, Goddess and fantastical beast memorized. I think my early obsession with myths and folklore is actually one of the things that drew me into anime - many anime draw influence from not only Japanese folklore, but legends from many other cultures as well.

Today we're looking at the Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet for June! The Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet is a monthly subscription service that includes a number of mini sized loose eye shadow pigments (anywhere from 4-6) and/or lip and other bonus products, sometimes including a guest product from another indie company, all created around a specific theme such as a movie, book, or fandom. It costs $12.90 per month including shipping. There is currently a wait list to get the subscription which you can join by emailing Notoriously Morbid, and sometimes you can catch one time "trial" subscriptions (good for that month only) on the website.

Hello Waffle Cosmetics: Visage - June 2016
Hey there geekonistas!
Well, I absolutely predicted this. But it's not totally my fault! I mean, a couple of my other subscription services ended, and there was no wait list! How could I resist getting back into the Hello Waffle Cosmetics' Visage? Plus, the owner is putting the shop on a four month hiatus while she adjusts to her new job (Visages will continue as usual), so this will be the only way for me to get my Hello Waffle fix until the fall!

Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet : "One Lonely Tear" May 2016

We're back again for another round with the Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet! This month the theme is the movie "Cry-Baby", a John Waters film starring Johnny Depp that I've never seen! So, I apologize if I don't get any of the references and things. What I do know is that this month comes with some great colors!

Innocent + Twisted: i+t alchemist - May 2016
Hey there geekonistas!
Again I apologize for the technical difficulties yesterday. I still haven't gotten my computer working properly, but I've at least found a workaround that lets me access Paint. That was a joy to edit photos in, let me tell you!
Anyway, last month when I read the clue for this month's i+t alchemist theme was "Cephiro", I squeed pretty hard with excitement. Cephiro is the name of the land in Magic Knight Rayearth that the three main characters are called on to save, and Magic Knight Rayearth is one of my favorite anime of all time. I even asked for a Sega Saturn for Christmas one year, just so I could play the game! People talk a lot about how "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" is such a subversive take on the magical girl genre, and while that's true, I think MKR was really my first experience in taking the magical girl formula and putting a new twist on it. The entire series is currently available on Hulu and I highly recommend you check it out!

Technical Difficulties

Hey there! I am having some technical issues with my computer right now. For some reason it's not letting me access any programs and any time I try to click on the start menu it tells me there's an error and I have to restart. Yay Windows 10.
In any case, I'm not able to access any of my photo editing software, which is considerably slowing down my blog posts. Hopefully I will be able to have the current post (this month's i+t alchemist - it's SO COOL, guys!) up by the weekend.
My apologies for the delay, and thank you so much for your patience!

Glamour Doll Eyes OTM: May 2016

This is turning out to be a great season for duochromes! There was Notoriously Morbid's Vanishing Cabinet last month, full of duochrome goodness, then they released one of the absolute coolest duochromes I've seen in awhile as part of their State of Fear collection (Check out "Spring-Heeled Jack on my Instagram)... at least until I saw the duochromes that came in this month's Glamour Doll Eyes OTM!

Walgreen's: Wonder Woman Makeup
Hey there geekonistas!
A couple months ago I posted an announcement I saw that said Walgreen's was going to be releasing an exclusive line of Wonder Woman makeup. Well, this week was the week that it finally released! I got my hands on as much of the collection as I could (the cashier said people were literally lined up to buy it, meaning I was lucky to even get what I did) but I think I snagged most of the major pieces, including the Beauty Book, eyeshadow palette, lipstick, and liquid eye liners. I think the only items I am missing are some lip glosses and the bronzer, plus the brush set and cosmetic bags. I don't know if Walgreens will restock these or not, but if they do I'm definitely going back for the rest!

Fortune Cookie Soap 2016 Summer Box: Just Keep Swimming!

Wow, does time fly! It seems like I just reviewed the Spring soap box a couple days ago, and here I am at the Summer box already! To be honest, I thought I had cancelled this subscription, so it was a bit of a surprise when it showed up on my doorstep. A surprise in the best way, however, since I absolutely love all of the scents included this month, and I don't need to tell you how rare that is.
